Oak Creek, Phippsburg, and Yampa are located in beautiful South Routt nestled between the majestic rocky mountains that Colorado is so well known for. Highway 131, which is next to Haymaker public Golf Course, is the most direct route to all three towns. Oak Creek is approximatly 20 miles from Steamboat Springs; Phippsburg is about four more miles; than Yampa is an additional six miles. Each town has their own ambiance of old West and friendly caring individuals who have pride in their communitites.
PHIPPSBURG:
Phisppsburg is only about four miles down the road from Oak Creek. Its a smaller area and unincorporated. Its population is nearly 500. Most people in P-Burg, as it is commonly called by the locals, primarily communte to other towns for employment unless you are lucky enough to be a rancher of hay or cattle in the P-Burg area. The Union Pacific Railroad still uses the town of Phippsburg for its switching operations today. If you are looking for solitude, layed back, serene, and beautiful then search nor further!
YAMPA:
The incorporated town of Yampa is only six short miles passed Phippsburg and its poulation is a little larger. Its a bit higher in elevation reaching 7,890 feet above sea level.
As in most of the Routt county areas cattle and hay operations were ane are abundant here. There was a short span of crop growing but that was lost due to soil problems. Yampa is a sportman's paradise. Its proximity to the Flattops Wilderness area brings hunters, fishermen, hikers, and sight see-ers. Yampa has a limited number of sonsumer based businesses but you can get a room, a meal, gas, and groceries without leaving Yampa.
The town of Yampa is named after a root that grows near the river banks. Its an old west ranching town that still boasts of cattle drives and community gaterhings. The elementary school which service Oak Creek, Phippsburg, and Yampa is small and delightful. The kids grow up with a feeling of well being in thier small class sizes and loving environment.
OAK CREEK:
Oak Creek's population is nearing 1,000 and its elevation is 7,400 feet above sea level. It is a typical small western town comprised of ranchers, coal miners, business owners, and commuters to Steamboat Springs. It is the hub of economics between the three cities Oak Creek, Phippsburg, and Yampa. The South Routt middle and high schools are located close to the downtown area (the elementary school is located in near-by Yampa). Main street is reminiscent of the old Andy Griffith shows and every bit as friendly. Oak Creek was first named for the Scrub Oak that is found on the river banks.
Mining operations are still in existence and are located just west of Oak Creek. The Twenty-mile Coal Company and Seneca Mine, are prominant employers in Routt County and produce most of the state's coal today. Oak Creek is a delightful small western community incorporated in the early 1900's and values its members and small town ranching roots.
